Hello and welcome to my lovely Year 6s!  I'm really pleased that you have come to this page to look for some home learning opportunities! 

As you know, you all received a home-learning pack before the school closure came into force.  The work in these packs can be used to support your learning whenever you choose.  There is plenty in those packs to keep everyone from getting bored while they are stuck at home!  However, there will also be tasks set each week-day (except for school holidays and bank holidays) on this page.  There will be a Maths task, an English task and a Topic/Science task for each day- scroll down for the latest set work.  Obviously, it would be great if you all attempt at least some of these.  Remember to keep reading too as well as using Times Tables Rockstars and Purple Mashsmiley.

MATHS

Today's lesson is the next lesson on co-ordinates and it is the second lesson on Solving Practical Co-ordinate Problems.  If you had trouble following yesterday's lesson, it might be a good idea to re-do yesterday's lesson instead of moving on to today's work as you will just get more confused!

 

Remember, co-ordinates always come in pairs - the first one is for the horizontal axis which is called the x axis (x goes across and x is a cross) and the second number is for the vertical axis, the one that goes up/down and is called the y axis.

ENGLISH

Thank you to those of you who shared your balanced arguments from yesterday on the blog.  It was good to see that you can still complete a piece of writing to a good standard!  It was also interesting to read who thinks this home learning is a good idea and who doesn't laugh!

 

Today's lesson is a reading lesson from BBC Bitesize - I know a lot of you prefer their lessons (but I think they are often a bit easy for you!)  Part of the reason I chose this lesson for you today was for Harry.  He has been working really hard on his home learning over the past few weeks and when I saw a lesson using Percy Jackson, I thought of him straight away!  I know some of the rest of you have read the Percy Jackson books too but I know when we were learning about Ancient Greece in the Atutumn term, Harry ALWAYS had one of the books in his hands!

 

When I worked through the lesson myself, the reference to Percy being a 'half-blood' (half human/ half Greek God) also made me think about the Harry Potter stories where there are also half-bloods but they are part wizard, not part God.  I wonder if any of you are reminded of any other books you have read?  Let me know if you can see similarities between this story and any others.

By the way, I have been reading LOADS when I'm not at school or not on my laptop - every time I am in school, I grab some more from our book corner so I have read most of them now.  I'm currently reading 'Murder Most Unladylike' which I remember Alice reading at one point  - Alice, did you finish it?  What did you think of it?  If any of you have any suggestions of books I should read and put in the book corner, please let me know!

 

 

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Yes, I thought we'd have a DT lesson to end the half term with - partly because I was intrigued by the title 'Extreme Designs'!  It is another Bitesize lesson so there's a good video to watch to start with (which is what hooked me in!)

 

The first video is about The Bloodhound project which aims to build the fastest vehicle on Earth:  the Bloodhound supersonic car, which they hope will hit 1000 miles per hour.   I think some of you will really enjoy it!

 

There are then two videos of children doing experiments with designs of water rockets and also parachutes.  I know many of you did the parachute lesson in Science a few weeks ago so you can compare how you tested yours with how the children in the video test theirs.

 

The activity you are set is to design and make your own parachute BUT obviously, many of you have already done this (I would like to think ALL of you have already done it but I know that's probably not true!)  So, if you haven't done it as part of our Science lessons recently, then go ahead and use the activity instructions for this lesson.  The rest of you, please just go straight to Activity 2 which is all about making a balloon powered car - this is quite an ambitious project but I thought you could spend your half term working on it and improving on it till your car is the absolute best it can be!  Good luck!

I'm sorry if your instructions are a bit brief today but I have already set you the whole day's learning and the website crashed without saving any of it so I am now doing it again!  I am NOT amused!  I'm sure some of you are having difficulties with all of this online learning too - the sooner we get back into the classroom the better!

ENGLISH

For the past few days, you have been planning a debate using opposite sides of the same argument.  Today you are going to put both sides together to form a Balanced Argument.  Your argument is going to be given the title:

 

SHOULD CHILDREN HAVE TO DO SCHOOL WORK EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NOT AT SCHOOL?

 

 

Remember, a balanced argument gives the reader information about an issue from different points of view, and then leaves the reader to make up their own mind about how they feel about the issue.  You need to take care to

present both sides of the argument in an impersonal way - this means it should be quite formal, with no use of I, you, we. And no contractions either!  You could use phrases like 'it is thought that...' or 'some people believe that...'  However, the conclusion should be personal, based on the evidence - so your final paragraph CAN have I, you, we etc.  Follow these numbered points to help you write your balanced argument.

  1. Start by stating the issue and the main approaches taken by schools over home learning.
  2. State the arguments that you wrote down on Tuesday which said why children should NOT have to do home learning and give evidence to back them up. This could be more than one paragraph.
  3. The state the arguments that you wrote on Wednesday which said why children SHOULD do home learning and give evidence to back them up. This could be more than one paragraph.
  4. End with your conclusion, based on a weighing up of the evidence.  The conclusion must summarise either side.  Sometimes it will reach a decision.  Sometimes it will ask the reader to decide for themself.

Today's lesson is the next lesson on co-ordinates - today you will be learning about Reflecting Simple Shapes.  Reflecting is a bit harder than translating as the shape 'flips over' - you have to imagine how it would look if it were reflected in a mirror

ENGLISH

Today in English we are going to carry on with the work on writing a debate.  Remember that yesterday you had to plan/ write a speech to say that children should not have to do school work while they are not in school?  Well today you are going to think of the counter-argument - you need to think of as many reasons as you can why

This week's lesson is 'Was World War 2 Inevitable?'  You will be asked to consider if the war could have been avoided.  Think about all of the people who were involved - was there any way any of them could have done anythign differently to stop the war happening?

I know it isn't Thursday but PE has moved to Tuesday for this week becasue you have another dance challenge!  Mrs Coxell enjoyed the Kung Fu Fighting final video so much, she asked us to set you another one.  I'd love it if more of you were abe to share your videos this time as only 2 year 6s sent theirs in last time (thank you Lily and Harry).  If you can't manage to share your video, please still take part - I've had a go at this one already and am looking forward to joining in tomorrow (I've even dug out a cowboy hat!

MONDAY 18th MAY

Who went on a virtual day trip on Friday?  Harry was the only one who let me know where he'd gone so thank you Harry for responding!

There are a few topics in Maths which we still haven't covered - one of them is my favourite, Algebra, so I am saving that one until we are (hopefully) back in school and I can teach it to your myself smiley (fingers crossed).  One of the other topics we haven't covered properly is co-ordinates.  Luckily for us, Oak Academy have covered this topic in a week of lessons so we are going to use those for this week's Maths lessons.  The Maths teacher explains it very clearly and the tasks are very useful.

SCIENCE

Today's home Science needs you to have a few items that your parents/ carers are happy for you to use so please CHECK FIRST!  I was going to just set you one challenge which requires you to use a lemon - but just in case you don't have a lemon at home, there is a different challenge to try if you prefer.  The second one needs you to use an egg and some salt so hopefully you will be able to convince whoever does the shopping at home that they can allow you to use those things.  You don't need to do both experiments but it would be good if you could do one of them, if you have the items you need.  As always, let me know how you get on using the blog or Twitter or email.

 

With this first one, please take care when you are heating the paper near a lightbulb at the end - DO NOT put the

paper too close to the light bulb or it will burn.

Your hoodies have finally arrived!  I am hoping you will be able to collect them from school either before or after the school day on Tuesday when I am next in to work with the key worker children.  I will confirm this with you on Monday.  They look really good!!!

 

But for now, today's home learning...

At the end of SATs week, we usually have a really nice Friday, to celebrate the fact that we have survived a difficult week.  So, as we have been doing a ‘lockdown’ version of SATs all week, today we are going to have a ‘lockdown’ celebration.  I would love to be able to take you all out for the day but I cannot do that so instead I am suggesting that we all take our own virtual day trips to wherever you want to go!

 

There is a list of attractions below – you can search up any of them and have a virtual day out there.  You are welcome to choose your own destinations too – those of you who completed the information leaflet earlier this week might want to go to the place you did your leaflet for.  Or maybe choose somewhere else to have some variety!

 

For each of these attractions you visit, take a photo of you enjoying the attraction (?!!) and sum up your experience by answering the following questions:

 

1, Where did you visit?

2, Describe your tour.

3, List 3 things you saw on your tour.

4, List 3 interesting facts about your tour.

5, List 3 things you learnt on your tour.

6, What was your favourite thing on your tour?

 

Make sure you let me know where you are going on your virtual trip.  I think I'll go on a city tour of Budapest in Hungary as I would like to visit there!

THURSDAY 14TH MAY

Last day of SATs for you guys!  SATs week always ends on the Thursday which means you have NO TESTS tomorrow - hooray!  As you have done 3 Maths tests already, you are finished with those papers so there's just one English paper left to do today - the Reading paper.

As there are no more Maths papers to do, today you have a selection of Maths puzzles to have ago at.  You might just want to choose one to solve or you might want to do them all - it's up to you:

 

ENGLISH

As I mentioned earlier, today's SAT paper is the Reading one.  There is an extract all about children and manners which you may or may not find amusing.  There are then some questions about the extract with a rather bizarre mark scheme.  The answers are on the last slide - if your parents are willing to help you, it would be good to get them to mark your answers as they are allowed to award points to your total - they will probably find some of the questions a bit funny!

PE

I don't know how you guys at home are feeling about Joe Wicks but the chidlren who are in school most days are getting a bit fed up with his work outs.  I therefore thought we could try a different type of PE lesson today.  This PE lesson is given by a company a bit like Play Sport which Mr Sleet and Mr McBride run - this company is called uSPort and I really enjoyed having a go at this PE lesson.  All you need is a bit of space and a (clean) pair of socks!

WEDNESDAY 13th MAY

Day three of SATs week. I'm glad some of you - especially Lily! - enjoyed yesterday's silly SATs.  Did you come up with some ridiculous answers?  Today there are two SATs papers to work through - a Maths one and a Grammar one.  Remember, they are a bit of fun and nothing to worry about smiley

MATHS

Well yesterday you had some unanswerable questions (although Mrs Coxell was excited about the last question in the paper which was about us buying her a present!).  Today you have another Reasoning paper with lots of 'blanks' to fill in.  Sometimes you need to put words in the gaps, sometimes you need to put numbers.  A lot of the questions are very relevant to current issues we are all facing, such as running out of toilet roll and having to keep 2metres apart!  I hope you find the questions amusing...

 

ENGLISH

Thank you sooooooo much to Ronnie, Harrison and Lily for sharing your information leaflets on our blog - I was very impressed with the work you produced.  Also Brae although I couldn't really see yours!  Well done to anyone else who completed the English task but was unable to share their work - its great to know you are still trying hard with your learning.

 

Now that the information leaflets are finished, we need to do a couple of English SAT papers for the next two lessons.  Today's lesson is a Grammar paper which has been completed ... but not very well!  Can you spot the mistakes and correct them?

ART

After the stress of not just one but TWO SATs papers, you probaby need a nice relaxing lesson to just chill out and relax - so we're going to do some Art to help us recover from the pressure of the 2 test papers!

 

Today's lesson is all about optical illusions and the effect you are taught to use is really impressive.  You need a piece of paper, a pencil and also colouring pencils and a black felt tip if you have them - but you can do this lesson with just a normal pencil.  If you follow the instructions carefully (I had to keep pressing pause as I couldn't keep up!) then the finished piece makes your eyes go funny (that isn't a very scientific explanation!)

TUESDAY 12th MAY

Day two of SATs week.  I wonder how many of you are glad not to be doing the tests and how many of you actually wish you were?  I hope you enjoy having a go at today's Maths paper!

ENGLISH

Yesterday you followed the online lesson to write your own information leaflet about a destination of your own choice.  As promised, today's lesson is for you to finish it off:

  • Finish doing all of the writing.
  • Read through the whole leaflet.
  • Edit your work - check spellings/ punctuation/ make sure it makes sense.
  • Add any illustrations you want to include.
  • Show it to your parent/ carer to see how impressed they are!
  • Share it on the blog if possible.
  • Share it on Twitter if possible.

 

HISTORY

I don't know about you but I am really enjoying the History lessons explaining what was going on in the World in the run-up to World War 2.  The next lesson in the sequence is 'What was life like in Nazi Germany?'How did Hitler rise to power?' which is such an important question when you think about the War - Hitler was such a key figure to the War even starting but how did he become so powerful?  Do you think someone like Hitler could become as powerful today?

MATHS

Your first SATs paper of the week is the Arithmetic Paper from 2017 which has been completed by somebody who is nowhere near as clever as any of you.  Have a look through it and see how many mistakes you can spot...

 

ENGLISH

As I said last week, we are going to complete the work on information leaflet writing.  Last Thursday, you were asked to do a bit of research into your chosen destination - it could be a country, a town, a park or even your home - anywhere you want!  Today you are going to follow the lesson below to guide you through writing the leaflet.  I would really like you to follow the lesson when you do this BUT I am not expecting you to get the whole leaflet written today.  If we were at school (who can tell me what I have just written an example of?  Remember Beyonce...!), then I would give you two lessons to write this leaflet - tomorrow we would be finishing off and illustrating it then editing it.  So that's what we're going to do.

SCIENCE

I am going to give you two Science activities to do today because they both use water so just in case you get wet frown, we might as well do both experiments in one go!  It is unfortunate that it isn't as hot and sunny as it was on Saturday...sad  I would strongly suggest that you do BOTH experiments outside and please check with your parents/ carers before you do ANYTHING.

FRIDAY 8th MAY

 

75th anniversary of VE Day

 

As today is a Bank Holiday to mark the anniversary of VE day, there are no 'proper' lessons for you to do.  However, if you want to do some learning or if you are particularly interested in World War 2 and VE Day, why not choose from these activities to find out more about this special day.

THURSDAY 7th MAY

As tomorrow is a bank holiday (VE Day), there won't be the usual day of lessons planned for you but I will be putting some VE Day activities on here for you if you want to do some .  As I wrote in the History lesson, it is a good idea to do some research into VE day as it ties in with our WW2 project - although we are currently learning about the beginning of the war rather than the end!

Today's lesson is the second one on Problem Solving, so again, you will have to use lots of different skills we have learned in Maths in order to solve these problems.

This lesson is all about using appropriate language and writing style in an information leaflet.  We have spent a lot of lessons in class talking about writing formally: using the third person instead of the first person; using suitable vocabulary - and also, NOT using contractions.  An information leaflet doesn't have to be really really posh - we want people to enjoy reading it and to feel interested.  So it can be quite a tricky thing to write formally but not TOO formally.

One of the independent tasks is to think about somewhere that you would like to create an information leaflet about ready for the next lesson.  It coudl be somewhere that you have been in the past and that you really enjoyed visiting.  Or it could be somewhere that you would like to visit one day in the future.  Or it could even be your home!  Think about how you woudl make your home sound like an exciting and interesting place to visit (you can exaggerate the facts if you wish to!)  You DO NOT have to write your own leaflet today - just think about what place will be on your leaflet and think about how you will write about it formally.

TOPIC (HISTORY)

Today we are continuing with our topic of World War 2 which is very appropriate this week as Friday is VE Day.  VE stands for Victory in Europe and it is the anniversary of the day the war ended in Europe, including Britain.  Fighting continued in the Pacific Ocean, with Japan still fighting.  It would be nice if you could find out a bit more about how VE Day was celebrated in Britain 75years ago but before we learn about it in a lesson, we really need to learn more about why the war started.  Last week we learned about the Treaty of Versaille and the 'punishment' given to Germany after World War 1 - I was really surprised to learn that Germany did not finish paying their debt for WW1 until 2010.  Today we are going to find out how this contributed to Hitler becoming powerful in Germany.

It's quite a long lesson - it lasts nearly 40 minutes - and it talks a lot about politics and economics in Germany after World War 1 but it is explained very clearly and hopefully you will be able to follow most of it, if not all of it.  There is some film of Hitler meeting the people of Germany and giving a speech too which you will hopefully find interesting.

 

TUESDAY 5th MAY

 

Today I have a real challegne for you.  The third lesson of the day is being given to the WHOLE SCHOOL but obviously I need Year 6's contribution to be the best!  You are being asked to follow a Just Dance YouTube video to learn the moves for a given song.  If your parents are willing to, they then need to film you doing the dance and share it on the school's Facebook page.  Mr Keohane is then going to use bits of everyone's video to create a montage (mix) of everyone who takes part.  I would LOVE it if lots of you join in and contribute.  Even if your parents don't have Facebook or don't want to share your video, you will hopefully have fun doing it.  The link for the video and all instructions are below.

Today is another revision lesson but this time on Negative Numbers.  Our lessons on Negative numbers were back in September (do you remember me creating a really long positive and negative number line which went on the Greek pillar in the book corner?)  Hopefully you can remember the rest of the lessons too!

It is actually quite a short lesson with only one piece of work at the end so if you would like an extra challenge, try this work based on Temperatures in 4 locations in the World (extra challenge - find where these places are!)  Some of you did a sheet similar to this one when we did the work on Negative Numbers but nobody got on to this one:

 

Questions 13 - 17 ask you to calculate the mean temperature - can you remember how to do this?  You have to add up all of the temperatures for that destination then divide the total by the number of months (12).

I need to apologise to many of you for 'ignoring' your blogs last week.  I wasn't ignoring you, I promise - there was a technical hitch with Purple Mash and the teachers weren't able to see any work or blogs the children had added.  I used to get an alert when any of you had added anything but that doesn't seem to happen any more.  I will keep checking instead now to be sure I don't miss any of you.  I am especially sorry to Alfie who asked me a Maths question last Monday and I didn't see it till Friday - I did feel really bad about it Alfie so I hope you forgive me!

How did you find the Friday Challenge?  I hope you all got the algebra question right at the beginning!

 

Today is a revision lesson on BODMAS (or BIDMAS) - can you remember what those letters stand for?  Remember, Addition and Subtraction are actually equal in importance - so you just do whichever one comes first in the calculation.  The same goes for Division and Multiplication.

SCIENCE

It was great seeing some of your parachutes on the blog last week - the plastic bag parachute seemed to be a popular option although Harry's paper glider-style parachute looked very stylish.  Ronnie said he really enjoyed that lesson so I hope this one is as enjoyable (fingers crossed!).  If you don't have food colouring, you can use a few drops of ink or even the insides of old felt-tips to colour the water.  You can even add glitter to make it like a lava-lamp!

 

What effect do you think the washing up liquid will have?  Give it a try...  Let me know on the blog what you see.

FRIDAY 1st MAY

Wow - it is May already - where did April go?  Let's hope this rainy weather disappears soon and the sunshine comes back again.

 

 

I just want to make sure none of you are using up all of your family's paper and printer ink while you are completing your home learning.  Wherever possible, don’t print anything off, just do the work from the screen onto a piece of paper. Or use the exercise book I gave you in your pack.

 

On the bbc bitesize lessons, they often use worksheets from twinkl. When you look at the sheets, they have either one star or two stars or three stars on them - usually at the top or at the bottom of each sheet.  One star means its the easier version, two stars means most people should be able to do it, three stars means it is the tricky version. So it’s a bit like ‘choose your challenge ‘ - just do the challenge level which suits you best.  I hope that helps you decide which work to have a go at and also reassures you that you don't need to be printing out lots of work.

You may have seen on Amira's blog that it is Ramadan at the moment and she is fasting during daylight hours as part of the Ramamdan tradition.  I cannot imagine how hard that is when you are stuck at home all day.  Amira is quite young to be fasting too - many Muslim children wait until they are a bit older so well done Amira for trying to do it.  Let us know how it is going.

 

We did learn about Ramadan when we were learning about Islamic Civilisations - I wonder how much you can remember?  We watched a few videos and met the girl who is in the first video in today's BBC Bitesize link but we didn't actually watch this video.  There are quite  a few videos in this lesson - Ronnie's favourite style of lesson laugh.  There are some worksheets at the end of the lesson but please don't print them all out - read my comment at the beginning of today's home learning.

I promised Lily an Art lesson today and I found one you can all try.  As long as you have a piece of paper and a pencil, you can take part in this lesson.  If you have coloured pencils, then that's even better.  I like the patchwork effect you can achieve with this technique and I like it even more because you don't have to be an 'arty' person to still be able to produce an effective picture.  The use of texture is really impressive and you can use anything you can find around your house.  Watch this lesson and give it a go!

TOPIC - HISTORY

Last week we started looking at what life was like before World War 2 started - we heard form people who were young children at the time and were from England and from Germany.  Life was certainly very different back then with no televisions or phones or even toilets in most houses.

 

Today we are going to look into why World War 2 started - it might seem a bit complicated but try to follow as much of it as you can.  It was called a World War because it took place on so many continents and involved a great many countries even if they weren't directly involved in the fighting.

I would then like you to have a go at the lesson which you can find here: https://www.thenational.academy/year-6/foundation/was-the-treaty-of-versailles-fair-year-6-wk2-1  Click on 'start lesson' but then you do not need to do the 'introductory quiz' - click on 'next activity' and watch the lesson.  It is given by a History teacher called Mr Hutchinson.  He starts off by talking a bit about the end of World War 1 which we haven't learned about - this was the last lesson which this teacher gave but we did not use that lesson.  It's quite useful that he recaps what he covered and he also shows you some work from other Year 6s - but he quickly moves on to what happened AFTER World War 1 and this is where we need to pay attention!  He sets you a few tasks to do throughout the video and then at the end there is a short quiz.  This information tells you everything you need to know about the consequences of World War 1 and the lead-up to World War 2.  I hope you find it interesting.

Thank you soooooooo much to those of you who shared your English work on the blog on Friday.  I loved reading your Matt Haig-style writing and was very impressed to see how well you could use dialogue in your stories.  What a clever bunch you are!

 

Your English today is using BBC bitesize again and I am really hoping you will share your work again because I found the video for Activity 2 very amusing!  The lesson is all about using punctuation (please, please, please use punctuation because I get very upset when you don't crying) and the lesson also covers using paragraphs effectiviely in your writing.

Here is another Science lesson for you to try at home.  Hopefully you have the equipment at home to make a successful parachute.  Perhaps you could choose a small toy to be the 'weight' attached to the parachute. 

 

I would like you to decide on a variable to test.  You could choose from these suggestions or come up with your own idea:

Does my parachute work no matter how heavy the object is?

Does the area of the parachute make a difference to how long it takes to fall from the same height?

Does the length of the strings make a difference to how the parachute falls?

What is the minimum height the parachute can be dropped from and still work?

I've been looking forward to today's lesson all week!  It is a Reading Lesson using the text 'To be a cat' by Matt Haig.  Does anyone recognise the name of the author?  He is the man who wrote Shadow Forest!  I was very excited when I saw that the BBC were using one of his books for our lesson.  This book is very different to Shadow Forest but I wonder if you can see (or hear) any similarities with his writing style?

The extracts that are used in this lesson use a lot of dialogue (speech).  Do you remember me trying to teach you how to use speech in your stories which moves the story on or tells the reader more about the characters?  This is a really skilled way of using dialogue in your writing so this is a great opportunity to think how Matt Haig does it.  So while you listen to the extracts, please think about the use of speech. 

Is the dialogue:

  • telling us more about a character?
  • moving the story on?

 

After the two extracts being read out, there are three activites for you to have a go at (one of them includes another extract from the book if you were enjoying it).  Activity 3 asks you to have a go at writing another chapter of the story in the style of Matt Haig - please share these on the blog as I can't wait to read them!

 

PSHE (or 'Wellbeing')

The bbc bitesize resources have got a lesson called 'Wellbeing' especially for Year 6s.  It is all about starting secondary school which I'm sure is on your minds now that we only have one term left of this school year.  The first video follows a boy called Alfie (??!!!!!) on a typical day at secondary school - it helps you to see the obvious differences between primary school and secondary school.  The second video shares some tips on not getting lost in your new school, and other helpful information.  The videos can be found here:

After you have watched the videos, scroll down to where it says Where Next? - there are some more useful links there which I recommend you look at.

 

Most importantly, DO NOT WORRY about Year 7.  It is still a LONG way away and even if you don't know anyone going to your secondary school, there will be lots of other children who are in the same situation as you and who feel just as worried as you.  All of the older children will also remember how scary it is when you first start and although some of them might not be helpful to you, there will be lots of them who are.  And most importantly, the teachers will all know that you will be nervous and they will want you to enjoy yourself and be keen to go back!  I know how lucky your secondary schools will be to be getting you wink.

 

An extra, quick activity for today is one suggested cleverly by Alice. On a Friday as part of our PSHE we always write a post-it-note positive about a selected person in our class. The next person on the register for this is Brae. On Purple Mash, I have started a new blog: 'Positive Posts'. Each week I will add a post to the blog with the next person's name. I would love for you to then comment below my post with your positive for that person. It is really important you post as a comment within my post, otherwise it will get very complicated and messy! I know some of you are a bit fed up with Joe Wicks - especially Ronnie!  So I have a different kind of challenge for you today. 

 

I want you to have a go at creating an obstacle course in your home or in your garden for you and your family to try!  Obviously, DO NOT  break anything and only use objects if the adults in your house tell you you can.  I would also suggest you DO NOT climb on any furniture without permission!  This is supposed to give everyone a bit of exercise but also it should be fun to do.  You could time each other doing it and make it a bit of a family competition.  PLEASE DO NOT INJURE YOURSELVES!

We're going to keep going with the work on ANGLES on the White Rose Maths website today.  I am super impressed with Jessica who really struggled to follow the work on this on Monday but she stuck with it, got her Mum to help her out a bit and successfully completed the lesson.  This would be impressive under normal circumstances in the classroom but it is WAY more impressive to manage it while home learning.  Great job Jess - amazing commitment to your learning.  How about the rest of you?  How are you finding it?  Jess contacted me through the class blog on Purple Mash to ask for help - I do check it many times a day so will always get back to you as soon as I see you messages.

We're going to carry on with our revision of grammatical terms this week.  Today's lesson is about Passive and Active verbs - remember 'by zombies'!!!

 

So, go to: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zbngrj6 and work through the videos and activities.  This should be revision for you as we have spent a few lessons on active and passive verbs.  There's a good demonstration on how instructions for making a banana sandwich can be written in the active form and also in the passive form.  This is quite a skill.  Think about the effect of using the passive form - what effect would it have if you used a passive sentence within a story?  Quite often it is cleverly used by authors to stop the action at a tense moment in a story - for example "The door was opened." or "The screaming was stopped."

 

If you are feeling creative, have a go at writing an action-packed paragraph from a story and use one or two passive sentences in it.  Think about the effect your chosen sentences have.  Put your paragraph on the blog for me to look at!

Mrs Yau has very kindly prepared another French lesson for you.  There are lots of video links for you to watch so I would suggest there is enough here for a double lesson.  Maybe just do half of it today and then the rest next week - I will re-post this lesson.  Or if you prefer, go through it all today and then next week you can revisit it and see how much of the vocabulary you rememeber.  Those of you with older brothers or sisters at secondary school can practise some French questions and phrases with them!

So, how did you find the first day 'back at school' yesterday?  I know Lily had trouble with the White Rose Maths website not opening - I'm hoping this was because it had a lot of visitors and that it might be better for us in future.  And Ronnie didn't really enjoy the BBC English lesson on nouns and pronouns.  I really do appreciate your feedback as we need to make sure this home learning works for everyone.  I'd like you to stick with the White Rose Maths and the BBC English for now and hopefully I'll get some more responses from the rest of you - then I can decide how we carry on.

TOPIC

This term we are starting a new topic.  Our Geography-based topic of Extreme Earth is finished and we are moving on to the History-based topic of World War 2.  I really enjoy teaching this one and hopefully you'll enjoy it too.  You probably already know some things about World War 2 but hopefully you'll learn even more!

 

Anything that has happened in the past, no matter how recent or distant is History.  WW2 is quite recent history becasue it happened less than 100 years ago.  WW2 had a HUGE impact in a short space of time.  And because it is recent history, people are still alive who experienced it. For this reason, we know a lot about WW2 because we have loads of PRIMARY evidence – i.e. it comes from the period being studied. Secondary evidence comes after the period being studied - we have loads of this as well!  And before any of you ask, no I was not alive then so no, I am not primary evidence!!

 

You might well have heard about Captain Tom Moore who is a World War veteran - he is nearly 100years old and has recently completed 100 laps of his garden and raised millions of pounds for the NHS.  Being a  veteran means that he fought in the war - see if you can find out what his role was in the war.  He is a Primary source of history because he lived through it.

 

I would like you to watch the following short films which explain what life was like in Britain and in Germany just before World War 2 started (they are two halves of the same program).  There are several primary sources in these videos - people who were alive back then.  They explain how different life was in the 1930s and the videos explain what happened to lead up to the war starting.  There's an interesting bit about what school was like in Britain then - one of the lessons was doing the laundry!  And look out for the football kit worn by the teams in 1939 - I think we should consider that style for the Fox Hill Football Team kit!!

Hello my lovelies!!! I hope you all had a good Easter break and enjoyed the rest from the home learning.  Welcome to the Summer Term!  This is your last term at Fox Hill and it couldn't be more weird could it?!  I can't wait for us all to be together again - but in the meantime your learning will continue to be put on here every day for you to have a go at.  I thought we'd try using some of the lessons that the BBC have arranged - they might be a bit more interesting than using the same style of lessons that we do at school.  And we're going to try somethng different for Maths too.  Let me know what you prefer by contacting me on the Purple Mash blog or send an email to the school secretary's address and it will get to me.

After all of the mistakes on the sheets at the end of last term, I thought we'd try using a different way of doing our Maths lessons for a week or two and see how you find it.  We are going to try the website for White Rose Maths as they have prepared some really helpful teaching videos for each lesson, then a worksheet or activity to follow it up.  Best of all, they also have the answers for you to access so that you can see if you are understanding the work or not.  The only 'downside' is that there is just one activity for everyone to try so it might be a bit hard or even a bit easy for some of you - I know you like the 'choose your challenge' work I usually give you.  Perhaps with this new style of work, choose how many of the questions you attempt depending on how well you feel you understand the work after watching the teaching video.  Let's give it a go and see what you think...

This is the last day of home learning before the Easter break.  You have got 2 weeks off after today - but if you get bored, you can always have a look in your home learning pack that I sent home with you when the school closed.

MATHS

Let's see how many mistakes you can spot today - I think you all enjoy the challenge of finding them now!  Yesterday there were mistakes spotted by Lily, Ebony and Jessica!!

 

We are carrying on with the work on Volume today for one last lesson before the Easter break.  Volume is the amount of space a 3D object takes up.  So Area is the space a 2D shape takes up and is measured in centimetres squared (or metres squared or miles squared etc)  but Volume is measured in centimetres cubed (or metres cubed or miles cubed etc).  The units are cubed because we have to multiply 3 measurements together to find the total volume.  (When we find area, we are only multiplying 2 measurements together which is why the units are squared).

 

So all you need to remember is that:

 

Volume = length x width x height

 

As usual, work through the powerpoint (see if there are any mistakes!) then try whichever challenge you feel capapble of in the Varied Fluency work (page 2 = Challenge 1, page 3 = Challenge 2, page 4 = Challenge 3).  Once you've done the Varied Fluency challenge and checked your answers, have a go at the Reasoning and Problem Solving.

ENGLISH

So, yesterday you planned your newspaper report - today you are going to write it.  You can write in columns and add pictures to make it look even better.  Remember to use your notes from yesterday.  The report is supposed to be about a natural disaster but it can be real or fictitious.

Remember to include:

What? (What is the text about)

When? (When did the event happen)

Where? (Where did the event take place)

Who? (Which people are mentioned)

Why? (Why did the event happen)

 

Headline (to summarise the article – include alliteration and word play)

Introduction (include what, when, who, where and why?  Also consider how you will get the reader’s attention)

Body (detail about the event)

Summary (tell us what is happening now)

Quotes (what did people say about the tragedy?) and reported speech (which doesn't need inverted commas)

Hello, Mrs Filisetti and I have been enjoying reading your posts on our class blog from last Friday's home learning. If you haven't accessed this previously set computing task, scroll down to find it before completing today's task so that you are confident with what you need to do. 

 

Last lesson we looked at the features of a successful blog and also experimented with contributing to a class blog. Although I have enjoyed your Blogging, many of you are not considering the audience (the reader) and basic punctuation and organisation of ideas is missing.

 

Therefore, today, we are going to plan the content of a blog using 2connect - a concept mapping tool. This has been set as a 'To do' task. Then, you will use your plan to create a clear, accurately punctuated and engaging blog on a Newsround story of your choosing. I am hoping that this will be just like our Friday mornings, people can share the story that interested them most, the key details, possible links to extra information and anything you have to add to the story. If you can, comment on other people's blogs, just like we do on a Friday. I can still remember us discussing all the peculiar food combinations we liked after sharing a Newsround story. 

 

Below is my example 2connect plan and then you will see a new shared blog called Newsround - please add your blogs to that one, not the one from last week. 

I am looking for:

Let's see how many mistakes Maja can spot today!!

 

We are moving on from Area and Perimeter to spend the last two lessons before the Easter break on finding Volume.  Volume is the amount of space a 3D object takes up.  So Area is the space a 2D shape takes up and is measured in centimetres squared (or metres squared or miles squared etc)  but Volume is measured in centimetres cubed (or metres cubed or miles cubed etc).  The units are cubed because we have to multiply 3 measurements together to find the total volume.  (When we find area, we are only multiplying 2 measurements together which is why the units are squared).

 

For today you are not going to be doing any multiplying though - you are just going to be counting blocks!  Easy peasy!  To show you what I mean, watch this video first (it is less than 2 minutes long!)

Hopefully that has helped and you have got the idea of counting blocks to find Volume - and that is all you are going to be doing today.  Now, I know that some people find it really hard to visualise shapes that they cannot see clearly or that are not obvious.  Which means you might find this really hard.  If we were at school, I would have the unifix cubes to help you build these shapes and see how many cubes you have used.  But we're not crying.  So you might want to use anything that you have at home - maybe Lego cubes?  Or if you have a  younger brother or sister, maybe they have some building blocks you could borrow?

 

As usual, work through the powerpoint (I have checked it but Maja is the ultimate in quality control!) then try whichever challenge you feel capapble of in the Varied Fluency work (page 2 = Challenge 1, page 3 = Challenge 2, page 4 = Challenge 3).  Remember, choose the challenge that you feel is appropriate to you - some people who find Maths easy in most areas find this really hard so be honest with yourself!  Once you've done the Varied Fluency challenge and checked your answers, have a go at the Reasoning and Problem Solving.

ENGLISH

So, we have looked at a few different examples of a newspaper report; we have considered what information needs to be included; we have thought about the vocabulary used and also the use of both direct speech and reported speech.  Guess what is next?  Yep, you're going to put all of that together to create your own newspaper front page.  Ideally, I would like you to report on a real natural disaster - you could do some research on the recent  Australian bushfires or the volcanic eruption in New Zealand or even the flooding in the UK.  Unfortunately, there are natural disasters happening all of the time so you can choose from a wide variety.  If you prefer, you could create a fictitious natural disaster (maybe an earthquake in Bracknell?!) and use this to write a newspaper article about.

 

So today is just the planning stage.  Write yourself some notes on your initial ideas:

What is the natural disaster you are writing about?

When did it happen? (Usually a newspaper will be reporting on something that happened 'yesterday' or 'last night').

Where did it happen?  Be specific.

Why did it happen?  Did something happen to cause it?

Who was effected?  Were people hurt?  Or even killed?  Are people still waiting to be rescued?

Quotes - who will you include direct speech from?  Maybe a survivor?  Or a family member?  Or a rescuer?

Reported speech - who might also be reported to have spoken to you as the reporter? 

Headline - what will your headline be?  It needs to be brief but also must make it clear what the article is about.

Opening sentence (or orientation) - this should be a very brief summary of the story to make people want to read on and find out more information.

 

Remember, you are not writing the newspaper article today - these are notes to help you tomorrow!

For this week's Art lesson we are actually going to be doing some design technology - I'm going to show you how to create an Easter bunny - or a Spring rabbit if you prefer!  Here's mine:

 

Before you panic, there is NO SEWING involved and the main thing you need is some socks!  Hopefully you have some random odd socks lying around or maybe some with holes in which are no good any more?  The rabbit is also stuffed with socks but if necessary, these can be retrieved in a few weeks when you don't want your rabbit any more.  The only sock that gets cut up is the one you can see so make sure no one wants that one any more!  Here is a photo of the equipment you need and a list:

odd socks, rubber bands, odd bits of ribbon, googly eyes if you have them, felt tip, glue (pva glue or similar), sharp scissors

Now, I have had a go at filming myself making the rabbit so that you can see clearly what to do each step.  I have tried very hard not to include myself in the videos (nobody needs to see me in the comfort of their own home!) and I know I haven't always given you a clear view of what I am doing - but I've never done this before so be nice to me!  Hopefully you can work out what I was doing in each step and you will be able to follow each video.   Please share your finished rabbits on twitter so that everyone can see them!  GOOD LUCK!

WEDNESDAY 1ST APRIL

PINCH, PUNCH, FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH...!

Well done to Maja and to Lily for spotting the error on slide 14 and 15 on yesterday's Maths powerpoint.  I apologise to everyone for sending out a side with a mistake on it but am really pleased that it was spotted and that both of the girls contacted me using email or our Purple Mash blog to point it out to me!

MATHS

As promised, today we are going to use your understanding of the area of a triangle, together with your understanding of a rectangle to work out how to find the area of a parallelogram.  Remember, a parallelogram is like a rectangle which has been pushed over from one corner.

 

Try drawing a parallelogram on a piece of paper.  Then cut off a triangle from one end.  This can be slid over and then it fits perfectly at the other end of the shape to make a rectangle.  This helps us to see that the area of a paralellogram can be calculated by multiplying the height by the base, as if it is a rectangle.  Try it yourself!

Today we are going to look at the vocabulary used in the newspaper article we were focussing on yesterday.  Scroll down to find it in yesterday's English home learning task.  Read through the report and identify any words you do not know.  Collect these words as a list and create a list of your own speed words.  

Look at my speed words from this extract:

 

axis, literally, shunted, submerged, grotesque, debris, orderly, unkempt, vast, fearful, unaccounted, intact, stupendously, tremor-prone, monstrous, rupture, cataclysm, grief-stricken, relic, demolish.

 

Your task today is to make sure you understand all of your own speed words and also all of mine!  Choose at least 10 words from either your own list or from my list (or a few from each) and  look them up (use a 'proper' dictionary or an online dictionary) and write the meaning.  Once you are sure you know what the word means, write a sentence with the word in it.  Find synonyms/ antonyms for the words if possible (this isn't possible with all of the words but it is with some of them).  If someone at home will do this with you, you could take it in turns to mime one of the words to each other to see if you can guess it!

FRENCH

As promised, I am asking you to repeat your French lesson from last week which Mrs Yau prepared for us.  There was a lot of information in it so you could start by testing yourself - how many words of greeting can you remember besides bonjour?  Then there were all of the colours - look around your house and see how many colours you can say in French.  Then go through the work in this attachemnt and see how much of the vocabulary you remember.  Make a note of any words you're unsure of - you could always put them on our class blog and we can work them out together!

How did you get on with finding the area of a triangle yesterday?  Did you manage to work through the challenge you chose from the options you had?  Is it useful having the answers to check your understanding?  Today's work extends the work from yesterday and builds on your understanding of area of triangles.  If you don't feel ready to move on to this harder work on triangles, perhaps go back to yesterday's lesson and choose the harder challenge work to do (so if you did challenge 1 yesterday, try challenge 2 from yesterday's lesson).  Tomorrow we will be using what you have learned about the area of a rectangle and the area of triangle to find the area of a paralellogram so you need to be confident with this work first.

Towns vanish, thousands die – but a nation begins its fightback

After a natural disaster so powerful it moved the Earth 10 inches off its axis, Japan woke yesterday to find itself a country that had, literally, been knocked sideways.

 

With the north-east coast now shunted two metres from where it was on Friday morning, neighbourhood after neighbourhood is submerged under a grotesque soup of water and debris. Homes have been flattened as if by the swiping forearm of an angry giant. Tens of thousands of once orderly acres look like the world's ugliest landfill – a jumble of broken homes, cars, boats, and concrete, with shipping containers cluttering the landscape like Lego on an unkempt nursery floor.

 And somewhere, under all this vast mess, are four entire trains, small towns, villages, and a

fearful number of bodies. It could be 2,000 people, 10,000 people, or many times that number. In one town alone, 9,500 people are unaccounted for.

A nation begins its fightback

But despite everything, Japan's spirit remains intact. As one blogger wrote yesterday: "Our grandparents rebuilt Japan after the war and the growth was considered a miracle around the world. We will work to rebuild Japan in the same way again. Don't give up Japan!!"  Others spoke with determination that they would rebuild entire cities.                    

A stupendously large task, however, faces Japan.

Japan lies on the border of 3 destructive plate boundaries so it is the world’s most tremor-

prone country, but Friday’s quake was the most monstrous ever recorded!

This was strong enough to leave a 186-mile rupture on the ocean floor, but it was the following tsunami – sending 30ft-high waves barrelling into Japan's north-east coast – which has turned a disaster into a cataclysm.

The wall of water moved at an estimated 25 mph and swallowed boats, homes, cars, trees and even small planes.  “I have never seen so much water – it covered everything.” One local resident told us.  Many people from this coastal city reported that boats have been found up to 12miles inland.

The wave used all this debris as battering rams charging up to six miles inland, demolishing all that stood in its way.

Police said that they found 200 to 300 bodies washed up on nearby beaches and grief-stricken residents searched for their former homes.

“My wife and 3 children are gone.  I can’t find them anywhere,” a local teacher told us.  “Without them, I have nothing.”

Faced with dark waters where streets had been, many couldn't even tell where their houses once stood.

Those who did find a place to rest for the night awoke to utter despair. Miles from the ocean's edge, exhausted, mud-spattered survivors wandered streets covered with fallen trees, crumpled cars, and light aircraft. Relics of lives now destroyed were everywhere – half a piano, a textbook, a red sleeping bag.

Rescue Services are continuing to search for survivors but the recovery process will be incredibly difficult.

 

Today we are going to be thinking about the use of direct and indirect speech in a newspaper account.  First of all, I would like you to write a list of all of the words that could be used in a newspaper report instead of said.

 

Next, I would like you to identify all of the quotes – direct speech – in the newspaper article above (clue: look for inverted commas (speech marks)). 

Then identify the reported speech for the article. 

What is the difference in how these two types of speech are set out?  Remember: speech marks enclose the exact words spoken; punctuation belonging to the words spoken goes inside the speech marks; other punctuation goes outside the speech marks. 

 

Your task today is to change all of the direct speech from the newspaper article into reported speech and the reported speech into direct speech, correctly punctuated.

I have prepared something a bit different for you today.  To see how much you remember of our learning on Volcanoes and Earthquakes I would like you to try two Kahoot quizes for fun.  I have set up this challenge so that you can only access the quiz using the links below which means you will be competing against your classmates.

When Rachel stepped out onto the beach she could smell the fresh ocean breeze. Then all of a sudden she saw a glisten in the sand! At first she thought it was a necklace or a ring but… when she walked towards it she realized it was a pocket mirror! As she picked it up the waves of the ocean started raging and the wind picked up. 

 

As Rachel opened the mirror she saw a vibrant purple glow! Her whole world turned and twisted. Her eyes closed and she fell.

 

Rachel was slowly waking up into a beautiful world of magic! She could smell a very sweet scent and she saw a lake of the clearest blue water ever! It was very dark in the cave but it was lit up by little bugs that had a glow of pink.

 

What she saw in the water amazed her! MERMAIDS! Rachel was in a mystical land of mermaids.

MATHS

On Friday we had a little break from learning about Area and Perimeter but we're back to that topic today.  Hopefuly the familiar lesson structure helps you to follow what you should be doing! 

 

Today you will be finding the area of a triangle.  I have briefly introduced this concept to you when we have been going through your SATs Buster homework - to find the area of a triangle, you need to think of the triangle as half of a rectangle.  So you multiply the height by the base but then you have to half the answer.  You can demonstrate this by drawing a rectangle and then making it into two triangles by drawing a  diagonal line from one corner to the opposite one.  The teachign power point will show this more clearly.

 

So, as before, start by going through at least 4 or 5 questions of the powerpoint and check you can work out the answers by checking the solutions on the slides.

Last week I asked you to create the presentation to go with your group's marble run.  This week I would like you to remember all the things you learned while building your marble run - all the things that you thought would work but didn't; all the things which happened without you wanting them to; all of the successes and the failures.  Now that you are an expert marble run builder, I would like you to use all of your new engineering skills to design a new slo-mo marble run.  You could watch the videos of all of our Year 6 models (on our Year 6 webpage) to remind yourself of all of the ideas.  Previous winners of the competition can be found at:

Create your design using clearly labelled diagrams.  Include the measurements and make sure it is clear how the marble will be slowed down at each point.  The rules from the competition are below to remind you of dimensions etc.  If you have what you need to build it (cardboard/ glue/ sellotape...) , you could use the Easter holidays to have a go at building your slo mo marble run.  Don't forget to share your models on the school's twitter account!  I look forward to seeing them!

 

Dimensions

• The marble run must not extend beyond a plan area of 600 x 600mm at any point

• The marble must start its run no more than 700mm above the bottom of the marble run

• There is no restriction on the height of any decorative feature or framework

• The marble run must incorporate an area or container to catch the marble  at the end of its run, which must be contained within the 600 x 600mm plan area

• The marble run must be clearly marked with a finishing line just before the  catch/stop area

• The marble used for testing must be a standard glass marble of between 14–17mm diameter.
Important: the marble run must incorporate a minimum of three different methods  of slowing the marble’s descent.
